Due for a summer release, VISI 18 is another substantial release with many new features in all areas of the product with a continued focus on tool design and manufacture. VISI Modelling is the base platform for all VISI products and version 18 delivers an updated GUI with graphic sliders that allow the user to dynamically interact with the working area to push or pull features and apply other system commands. One major CAD development is the introduction of geometry deformation tools that provide a technical leap forward and deliver exciting new features such as complex spring back deformation, draft application and organic shape editing. These new features will greatly benefit existing users who have to adapt customer data and also support more aesthetic markets such as product design or cosmetics. VISI Machining has been updated with a number of tools to further enhance the automated Compass Technology including a new method to manage the smallest distance between two or more sides of a geometric feature. This distance can be used to identify the smallest tool diameter for a pocket or define other machining variables. Other CAM developments include improved 3D constant step over, an improved 3D combi-finishing routine, updated rapid management and improved drilling cycles with a new wizard application for the construction of complex multi-operation cycles. Sheet metal development has been significantly improved with dynamic animation of the forming process and a batch procedure for developing multiple components simultaneously with a report for each piece. When working with imported geometry, fillet radii is often missing but required for blank development or step-by-step unfolding. VISI 18 introduces a new tool to automatically apply blend radii to inner and outer sharp edges. Other developments include new options for body interference checking and also a new tool to automatically create the hard inserts for die plates and apply relief holes to the corners. Finally, Vero have extended their partnership with CADENAS and have integrated PartSolutions V9 into the tooling suite, VISI Mould and VISI Progress. VISI 18 completes the full integration of VISI Flow and now the plastic injection analysis and simulation can be launched and calculated from directly within VISI, eliminating the need of model preparation for analysis. Importantly, the calculation results are also visible within the same CAD environment providing the perfect toolset for comparing the original model against the warped prediction data after the moulding process. VISI Flow also includes the ability to work with shell models and introduces a virtual resin laboratory that allows users to create and test different kinds of resin grades. The 'Virtual Laboratory' is based on intelligence included within the VISI Flow material database and works by following an interactive iterated approximation. The application is able to put together data coming from different databases and different grades by following a wizard based on user instructions such as polymer family, density and MFI. Also being previewed at MACH 2010 will be the first release of VISI PEPS-Wire. After the acquisition of Camtek Limited, VISI PEPS-Wire represents over 2 years of development and combines the class-leading technology of PEPS Wire with Vero’s Parasolid based geometry-engine. The first release of VISI PEPS-Wire will introduce automated 2 and 4 axis feature recognition, dramatically improved geometry tools and combined Milling and Wire EDM cutting strategies. Gerard O'Driscoll, R&D Director for Vero explains, "Using VISI as a development platform will allow PEPS customers to introduce further productivity tools such as modelling, progression tool design, mould tool design, and multi-axis machining. Whilst there will be a new user-interface to learn, the machining technology and core PEPS product will still be very familiar to existing users." To coincide with the 30th Anniversary issue of DPA (Design Products & Applications), an online poll was conducted asking readers to vote for products that they feel deserve recognition as prime examples of technological innovation. Over the last thirty years there have been extraordinary leaps in technology that have quite simply changed the way we live – the personal computer, mobile telephony and the Internet, to mention just a few. The manufacturing industry, too, has enjoyed the benefits of remarkable technological advances, and to celebrate this, suppliers and manufacturers nominated products that represented these advances in technology. The 'virtual' 30th Anniversary Innovations Awards attracted many nominations among the ten chosen categories where VISI was selected as the winner of the Engineering Software category. The VISI product suite is innovative in combining the best in solids and surface modelling, with complex model analysis and plastic flow simulation tailored towards 3D tool design and manufacture. Keeping the model within the same product environment throughout the entire design cycle from design to manufacture guarantees data consistency and greatly smoothes the design process. Basing a tool design on a preventive flow analysis can detect potential manufacturing issues – such as welding lines, air traps, best gate location, etc providing the maximum possible time frame for a corrective solution - This is only made possible through an integrated CAD/CAM/CAE analysis. An uninterrupted data exchange between the design and the analysis environment provides the ability to identify possible critical situations, set the most effective moulding parameters, optimise the runners and cooling layout and predict problems concerning any part of the plastic component creation process. Marc Freebrey, Group Marketing Manager for Vero comments "We are very proud to have won this award. We invest heavily in extensive research and we have a knowledgeable development team that strives to keep Vero at the leading edge of technology. We all believe in our products and it is pleasing to know that our customers are feeling the benefits - at least enough to vote." http://www.vero-software.com/news_detail.php?id=26 2009-09-14 http://www.vero-software.com/news_detail.php?id=26 Vero Launch Strategist v11 Vero Software Plc, a leading provider of CAD/CAM/CAE solutions for the tooling industry, are pleased to announce the imminent release of Machining Strategist v11. A powerful multi-axis CAM solution that generates optimum roughing and finishing CNC toolpaths for both the office and shop-floor environment. Machining Strategist is a CAD independent solution and can work with data from all major 3D modelling systems. Within the latest release, support for VISI 17 has been included and the external interfaces have been aligned to Parasolid v21 and Catia v5 r19. Significant enhancements to toolpath calculation times will provide dramatic productivity gains for the user. Benchmark tests have produced time saving results of over 80% reduction in calculation time for combined waterline, 30% reduction for rest machining and over 15% reduction for raster clearance. New geometry tools for model re-triangulation allow the user to set different meshing tolerances to different faces. This provides the capability of setting tighter tolerances for critical zones or smaller areas to machine without having a major impact on the rest of the model geometry. Further development with the use of 2D stock models, tool sheets and post-processing guarantees another step forward for Vero's innovative stand alone CAM solution. Gerard O'Driscoll, Research and Development Director concludes, "With the continual adoption of High Speed Machining (HSM) within the mould & die arena, our latest developments have been driven by customers to ensure we remain at the technological forefront of CAM development. The productivity increases will not only benefit our users, but also those who use our library components within their own CAM systems." http://www.vero-software.com/news_detail.php?id=24 2009-07-25 http://www.vero-software.com/news_detail.php?id=24 Vero Launch VISI 17 Vero Software, a leading provider of CAD/CAM/CAE solutions for the tooling industry, are pleased to announce the latest release of its flagship product VISI 17. The latest developments see further emphasis on end-user productivity in all areas of the product. The system graphics have been dramatically improved after major development collaboration with both AMD and Nvidia. The use of VBO's (vertex buffer objects) on the ATI FirePro and Nvidia GeForce graphics boards have returned exceptional software gains. In benchmark testing, results have shown the frame-per-second (FPS) rate jump from 5.5 > 146.2 for a 70MB dataset and 9.9 > 238.1 for a 118MB dataset. CAD enhancements include model thickness analysis which allows the user to quickly identify the thickest and thinnest areas of the model and help validate the model integrity, highlighting any potential areas that may cause internal voids, surface sink marks, unpredictable shrink rates and ultimately, longer cycle times. Further developments include intelligent body/face mating, improved annotation, updated printing and numerous improvements to the management of drawing files. One of the more significant is the ability to import pages from other work files and re-build the link between the solid geometry. This allows multiple users to share the same 3D design with each designer creating their own drawing pages - adding views, sections, annotations, balloons etc on separate workstations. When the pages have been completed, they can be loaded back into the master file and all links to the original 3D data are reconnected. CAM developments include enhancements to geometry feature recognition with the ability to recognise complex and simple holes on both solid & surface models. The feature recognition has also been extended to recognise features from a predefined direction and find features within a localised user-defined region. The separation of passes & linking will dramatically increase productivity and reduce calculation time. The user will now be able to inspect the toolpath quality before building the HSM linking movements. Continued development on the CAM engine have produced time saving results of over 80% reduction in calculation time for combined waterline, 30% reduction for rest machining and over 15% reduction for raster clearance. Incremental stock, automatic toolpath tilting and further improvements to multi axis machining guarantees another step forward for Vero's innovative CAM solution. VISI Flow has been further developed with the emphasis placed on the continued integration of plastic flow technology into a real CAD environment. VISI Flow uses a patented hexahedral hybrid mesh technology to provide accurate results with analyses run directly from the CAD model. Benefits include limited or no model preparation and the inclusion of feeding and cooling channels to the calculation. Importantly, the channel definition includes both geometrical and thermal proprieties. Along with gas-assist, sequential, and co-injection moulding simulations, VISI Flow also offers simulation for over-moulding and cross-linking polymers including liquid silicone rubbers. VISI Mould also benefits from the VISI Flow integration with the inclusion of a combined material database containing over 7,000 materials. Model shrinkage, based on material and other flow properties are automatically attached to the model ready for filling simulation. A new tool for the design of runners and gates provides the user with an interactive method to construct the injection circuit. The designer can select the type of gate from a parametric library and trace the channel sequence back to the sprue bush or hot runner with the result automatically validated for plastic flow analysis. VISI Progress, a dedicated solution for the metal stamping industry has been updated with focussed development on complex multi-step forming for deep drawing components - based on both analytic and FEA solvers. 3D strip construction has also been improved with the ability to parametrically modify the strip layout parameters (step, strip width), so that the system will automatically update the previously constructed punch geometry and rebuild the strip. This additional functionality provides the user with the freedom to simulate and understand live changes to the strip layout. A new collaboration with CADENAS, the largest external library of 3D standard components will benefit both VISI Progress and VISI Mould users. CADENAS PARTsolutions has over 500 library suppliers, covering thousands of components for multiple market sectors. The integration of CADENAS PARTsolutions into VISI17 will enable tool makers to shorten design times by providing access to readily available standard components for their mould or die assemblies. Select HERE to download PART 1 of the product review from the October issue of Develop3D magazine. Conclusion (part 1): VISI is an incredible piece of kit. If you just look at the modelling aspects (we’ll get onto the really meaty cutting metal related portion next month), then it’s incredibly powerful. Today’s CAD users are more discerning that ever before. We’re all used to the ability to work quickly and efficiently with geometry, and while the majority are certainly using one of the mainstream midrange modelling tools, when you’re dealing with import data or working with complex surfaces, you’ll quickly run into the one problem those types of systems have (and let’s be clear, I’m talking about SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor et al). Those systems work best with native data, because they’ve been designed as authoring systems with the end goal being a 3D model or a 2D drawing derived from it. A system like VISI (and there are others in the same class) differs in that the end goal is a production model on the back of which machining or tooling design is going to take place. When you focus on the mould and die market, the processes often rely on your ability to analyse, validate and fix the geometry your client provides, then to ensure that you create the best mould tool you can – because production success is directly attributable back to that underlying geometry. While VISI has all of those surface-based modelling tools you’d need, the system also has a massive range of tools that support the entire process, whether that be mould design or electrode extraction and design, as well as supporting the creation of production drawings in a very automated manner. While it’s not recognised as a standalone modelling tool, but as part of a bigger, more fully encompassing offering, I’m pretty damn sure that VISI could take the Pepsi challenge with any other modelling system on the market today – and win. Select HERE to download PART 2 of the product review from the November issue of Develop3D magazine. Conclusion (part 2) : I get to visit all the major vendors every couple of months. Some you leave thinking “Ok, good. But where is the innovation?” Others you leave impressed with their dedication to their users and to advancing the use of their products. Vero Software is always of this latter group. VISI has been an impressive system for many years, but in the last few release cycles the company has really cranked up the development cycle a gear or two. Compared to when I first saw the system, VISI today is supremely impressive. Not only does it have a wealth of knowledge and years of user-led development behind it, but also the work done recently to both refresh the user interface and to introduce new technology. The perfect example of both aspects working in concert are the new automation or intelligence-based tools which capture best practice and standard forms and allow users to create them in a very short space of time (whether that’s cooling channels, mould locks, mould stack design or NC operations). Taken as a whole, VISI is one of the most impressive products out there for those engaged in manufacturing. It’s got all the 3D CAD tools you could ever need, backed up with some highly impressive mould and die design tools which can then be followed through into production with the NC programming tools that have been its core competency for some time. It proves the fact that general purpose tools sometimes simply don’t cut the mustard and if you want to get the job done, you have to use a tool that’s tailored to the job at hand. http://www.vero-software.com/news_detail.php?id=20 2008-11-19 http://www.vero-software.com/news_detail.php?id=20 Vero Celebrates 20th Anniversary Vero Software Plc today announces the 20th anniversary of its formation.
